At the district’s Board of Education meeting on May 12, James Bolen was appointed as the new principal for North High School.
Bolen, who will start his new position on July 1, earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and communications at Boston College, and a master’s degree in education with a focus in social studies, grades seven through 12, at Fordham University. He also earned his New York State Certification in social studies, grades seven through 12, at the school. He earned his school building leader ACD at Stony Brook University.
He possesses a wealth of educational experience, including nine years of classroom teaching experience. For a number of years, he served as a social studies teacher, where he taught a variety of courses, ranging from AP US History to government and economics. He has also served as the Herricks Teachers’ Association Executive Vice President, and currently serves as an assistant principal at Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK High School.
Bolen said he was drawn to the position as well as the district, which he said has an impressive academic reputation. He looks forward to becoming immersed in North High School, which he described as a diverse and vibrant 7-12 school with a strong academic focus. He noted that when starting in his role, of great importance will be becoming acclimated with the school’s culture, and developing a strong rapport with faculty, staff and central administrators as well as being accessible to students. “This is an exciting opportunity—to be called on by a district like Valley Stream Central High School District is truly an honor,” said Bolen. “It’s vital, getting a sense of the needs of the students, parents, faculty, and getting a sense of the shared goals and visions they have, and to implement those in my first year. Anytime there’s change, you’re looking for a smooth transition. You want to make sure everyone is comfortable and united. For students, I believe tremendously in classroom experiences that are robust and give students the ability to delve into work. That has been happening already, and that’s something I want to continue and further expand upon.”
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Bill Heidenreich explained that Bolen was the candidate most qualified for the position, noting that he possesses a strong pedagogical background and an impressive focus on student-centered learning. As someone who is also well versed in staff development, sound instructional practices, the Common Core state standards and running the day-to-day operations of a high school, he was a great fit for North High School.
“The Board of Education and central administration are pleased to have Mr. Bolen as the new principal of North High School, “ said Dr. Heidenreich. “With an impressive educational background and proven track record of success, we’re confident he will continue and expand upon the tradition of excellence at North.”
