As part of developing their friendship-building skills and self-esteem, students in the Career and Technical Education Honor Society at Valley Stream North High School have been participating in the Hance Family Foundation’s “Beautiful Me” program.
Beautiful Me is a three-session self-esteem program designed to educate females by promoting appreciation of their genuine qualities, accurate self-awareness and the satisfaction of helping others.
The Hance Family Foundation was founded to honor the memories of Emma, Alyson and Katie Hance, three young children who died in a car accident on July 26, 2009. The foundation is dedicated to providing educational programs for children of all ages.
Vanessa Coppeto, a North High School Family and Consumer Sciences teacher and adviser for the Career and Technical Education Honor Society, helped bring the program to the school. During the sessions, staff members from the Hance Family Foundation engage students in discussions on a variety of topics to build students’ self-esteem. Students are encouraged to maintain a positive mindset, remain comfortable with who they are, and focus on their strengths, talents and personalities.
As part of their community service project, members of the honor society — students in 10th, 11th and 12th grade — will teach eighth-grade female students what they learned during their sessions as a way to empower them and embolden their confidence and individuality.
