The 2014 New York State Schools of Character award program, sponsored by the Academy for Character Education at Sage College and the Character Education Partnership, has recognized Valley Stream Memorial Junior High School as an Emerging School of Character.
The award program recognizes schools or districts that demonstrate outstanding school climate and academic performance. Memorial Junior High School was recognized for a number of its character education efforts, including its teacher mentoring, PALS tutoring and World of Difference programs, which allow students to engage in activities to broaden their understanding of character education.
The school was also recognized for its service clubs, which encourage involvement in the community; its scheduling of assemblies to establish goals and expectations for student behavior; and its Believe in the Rights and Values of Everyone Committee, which strives to emphasize core values in the school.
