Central High School senior Amanda Johnson was recognized for her essay on immigration and President Barack Obama's use of executive action at Hofstra University's 4th annual student symposium with University Senior Presidential Scholars Howard Dean and Ed Rollins. Amanda was one of five students representing schools from Nassau and Suffolk counties and New York City to receive this distinction. The symposium was co-sponsored by Hofstra's School of Education and the Peter S. Kalikow Center for the Study of American Presidency. All Central High School students in Mr. Gorman's Advanced Placement Government and Politics classes wrote an essay in response to one of three questions. The question Amanda responded to was, “What are the costs and benefits of President Obama's decision to pursue immigration reform by executive order, and how can he make progress with Congress on this issue in 2015?” She and 24 other Central High School students travelled to Hofstra for the symposium, which included a question and answer session with Mr. Dean and Mr. Rollins related to presidential leadership. These symposiums have offered students meaningful experiences which promote civic engagement and collaboration with local colleges and universities.
