On Sept. 11, students and staff members throughout the district took time to honor the lives that were lost during the attacks in 2001. Various tribute efforts were dedicated to the memories of that tragic day. Memorial Junior High School’s Leadership Club students, led by Library Media Specialist Joan Mahoney, walked to the memorial site in Hendrickson Park and shared meaningful poems, other readings and personal stories. MJHS staff members wore shirts that were sold as a fundraiser for the Michael Lynch Memorial Foundation, which provides grants to the children of firefighters and other victims of the Sept. 11 attacks. Central High School held a ceremony at the back of the building, where a beam from the World Trade Center stands. North High School held a morning moment of silence and social studies classes focused on how lessons about Sept. 11 are taught around the world. At South High School, taps was played during a moment of silence and students and staff participated in a national anthem singalong. These remembrance events were just some of the many held in the Valley Stream schools and community.
