North senior Anthony Martelli has been named the Nassau County 2013 Diamond Award winner for baseball. He is the first Valley Stream North baseball player to win this award. The Diamond Award is the most prestigious Nassau County baseball award and one of the most prized awards in high school sports on Long Island. There are 52 public schools in Nassau with a baseball team, and only one position player is selected from a pool of approximately 1100 players. Anthony’s baseball career at North has includes being a four year starter, one All-Conference Award, one All-League Award and two All-County awards. This year Anthony led the Spartans with a .505 batting average, 35 RBI’s, 37 runs, a .610 on-base percentage and 20 stolen bases out of 21 attempts. Anthony led all of Long Island with nine home runs, four of them coming during crucial playoff games. Diamond Award winners have gone on to play collegiate and professional baseball. Perhaps most impressive is that this young man is a true gentleman, sportsman and student-athlete with an exceptionally high grade point average. We wish Anthony and his family well as he takes his academic and athletic talents to NYIT in the fall.
