Central High School students Kayla Diedrick and Charles Luca were recently named semifinalists in the 2015 National Achievement Scholarship Program. The National Achievement Scholarship Program began in 1964 to recognize academically promising black American students throughout the nation. Nearly 1,600 outstanding black American high school seniors have earned this honor from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation each year. Diedrick and Luca have the opportunity to compete for approximately 800 Achievement Scholarship awards, to be offered in the spring. To become finalists and to be considered for a National Achievement Scholarship, they must fulfill a series of requirements, including maintaining a consistent record of high academic performance. Both students must also receive letters of recommendation and achieve SAT scores commensurate with their PSAT performance. The district congratulates Diedrick and Luca on their achievement and wishes them success as they strive to become finalists.
