Valley Stream Central High School’s music students recently participated in several unique opportunities in New York City. The Music Theatre Concentration attended a Tree of Codes performance at the Park Avenue Armory, while the chorus performed at a benefit fundraiser at Deepak Homebase at ABC Carpet and Home. Teachers Amy Neuner and Pat Tirino lead the CHS Music Theatre Concentration, which is part of the districtwide performing arts program. Mrs. Neuner is a founding director of the Youth Ensemble at the Armory, which has featured several CHS performers since its inception in 2013. Tree of Codes is a dance and music collaboration between electronic music group the XX, the Paris Opera Ballet and Company Wayne McGregor. The Armory is home to the nation’s largest unobstructed performance space. The chorus performance at ABC Carpet and Home supported the launch of the ReFoundry organization, which trains formerly incarcerated individuals to refurbish and repurpose discarded materials into one-of-a-kind home furnishings. The CHS vocalists were invited to perform ReFoundry’s adopted theme song, “With My Own Two Hands.” Deepak Homebase is a physical and virtual salon that hosts and sponsors intimate conversations and performances with renowned leaders and thinkers such as Hillary Clinton, Diane Sawyer, Oprah Winfrey, Arianna Huffington and President Barack Obama.
