The values of Valley Stream North High School’s BRAVE (Belief in the Rights and Values of Everyone) program were accentuated on Dec. 10, when the Nassau County District Attorney’s office presented its “Choices and Consequences” safe driving program to juniors.
Assistant District Attorney Christopher Casa highlighted the importance of personal responsibility and good decision-making as drivers and passengers in motorized vehicles.
The “Choices and Consequences” program is designed to combat drunk, drugged and reckless driving in support of Acting District Attorney Madeline Singas’s goal of reducing accidents and tragedies on the road. According to the Nassau DA’s website, traffic crashes are the number one cause of death for young people between the ages of 15 and 24.
Students were introduced to various laws associated with the presentation’s theme, as well as safety and precautionary measures. They experienced the life-threatening risks associated with reckless driving and the effect of alcohol on one’s perceptions during a skit that simulated a driving scenario.
Each “Choices and Consequences” assembly also gives its audience an even deeper understanding of the ramifications that dangerous driving brings by commissioning driving crime defendants to share personal accounts of how their actions negatively impacted their own lives, as well as others.
The BRAVE program focuses on integrity, responsibility, kindness, respect, acceptance and organization. For more information on driving safety tips and resources, visit www.nassauda.org.
