Valley Stream Memorial Junior High School students have been participating in a number of service learning opportunities, integrating the curriculum into community outreach initiatives that make a difference in the world beyond school doors. As two recent examples, they volunteered their science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) capabilities at the Hewlett House and demonstrated kindness and generosity through a birthday mail project. STEM Club and technology students ranging from grades 7-9 visited the Hewlett House, a nonprofit facility that helps cancer patients, where they completed much-needed repairs and renovations. They painted, assembled shelves and did more work that they were well-equipped for thanks to building and design lessons held prior to the event in the technology wood shop. Under the direction of teacher Chris Viggiano, the students learned valuable skills as well as the importance of giving back to the community. Ninth-grade students designed handmade birthday cards for homeless children. The heartfelt messages and illustrations were sent to a homeless shelter in Nassau County to brighten the birthdays of their recipients.
