South High School eighth-grader Ikenna Nebo was named a national winner in the NCTE Promising Young Writers Program. Nationally, 171 students were nominated and 39 were chosen as outstanding writers. There were only eight winners from New York.
For the contest, Ikenna submitted two original pieces, one themed and one representing his best work. This year’s theme was “The Best Thing I Ever Read While Growing Up.” Teams of teachers at the national level judged writing submissions and selected top entries. Entries were judged on audience, content, development, organization, purpose, style, tone and word choice.
