Eleventh-grade students from North High School’s Physical Education Leadership class visited all four elementary schools in Valley Stream School District 13 to provide valuable lessons regarding health and wellness. Through mini-lessons, the high school students inspired second-graders to make wise decisions with regard to nutrition, exercise and stretching. The Physical Education Leadership students set positive examples for their younger peers as they discussed the amount of sugar in popular drinks, the benefits of physical fitness, the role of stretching and warming up and the importance of balanced diets. They also led the second-graders in stretching activities as well as games that focused on food groups and exercise. Students in the Physical Education Leadership class, taught by Sharon Zovich, were trained as peer wellness educators. This initiative was started by the Nassau County Department of Health.
