On April 21, seven students from Valley Stream Central High School attended the Olympics of the Visual Arts competition in Saratoga Springs, where they entered the contest’s architecture category. The group won first place for their work in short- and long-term artistic problem solving.
The Olympics of Visual Arts, hosted by the New York State Art Teachers Association, was attended by teams from all over New York State and Long Island. Central students Natalia Bermeo, Ayanna Gittens, Grey Lancaster, Cathleen Liang, Aaraa Motiwala, Nicole Noel and Kimberly Rambarran prepared under the direction of art teacher Mario Bakalov.
The team extends a special thanks to senior Thieren Fraser, whose expertise in 3D modeling programs helped create a dynamic presentation, and to teacher Robert De La Cruz and other STEM program participants for their help with 3D printing.
The Olympics of Visual Arts poses a new series of problems each fall. Students create long-range solutions at their schools, and travel to the Albany area to compete on short-range problems in a day-long celebration of creativity. Awards are presented for each of the problem categories at every level.
