Valley Stream South High School hosted its first-ever Relay for Life event on May 20, successfully raising more than $50,000 for the American Cancer Society. Approximately 200 attendees and 25 teams came out to support this charitable event.
Relay for Life kicked off with an opening ceremony and special survivor dinner, which was followed by the first lap, dedicated to survivors, and a second one for caregivers.
School performances, entertainment, games and fundraising activities coordinated by students, staff members and other volunteers from the community were among the evening’s highlights, and a 9 p.m. Luminaria Ceremony remembered those who have been lost to cancer.
Luminaria bags dedicated In Honor, In Memory or In Support of loved ones created a brightly lit message of HOPE across South’s bleachers as participants walked and spent time together on the field.
Additionally, a Wall of Honor displayed photos of the individuals who inspired the Relay attendees.
