Valley Stream Central High School District students have earned awards and acknowledgments for their musical talents, which they share in the schools and community throughout the year. Additionally, Memorial Junior High School hosted one of the largest NYSSMA All-State and All-State Jazz festivals in New York State on May 20 and 21.
On separate days, students from Central High School, Memorial Junior High School and South High School participated in Music in the Parks events at Kutztown University in Kutztown, Pennsylvania and Dorney Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Central’s Choir placed first and student Kristen Smith was awarded the “most outstanding soloist” distinction, Memorial’s musicians earned three first-place trophies and South’s Wind Ensemble placed first in its division for the second consecutive year.
Central High School’s Select Choir ended the season on a high note, with a performance for the community at the gazebo in Hendrickson Park. It was a beautiful evening for this first-time event.
North High School’s Junior High Jazz Ensemble and Senior High Breakfast Club String Ensemble participated in the High Note Music Festival at Six Flags, Great Adventure in New Jersey on Friday, May 13. They performed to critical acclaim and both groups received a superior rating for their performance. The Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Mike Morris and the Breakfast Club, under the direction of Rebecca Hayden, meet twice weekly before school for rehearsals and perform at concerts and various functions throughout the school year.
South High School’s Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Elizabeth Pichichero, participated in the NYSSMA Majors Festival at Hofstra University on May 16. Orchestras from all across Nassau County attended the festival where the groups performed and were adjudicated. The South students represented their school with pride and came home with a silver medal. In addition to presenting the award, adjudicators commented on how professionally the group performed, looked and behaved.
