Memorial Junior High School in the Valley Stream Central High School District hosted its second annual Stand Up and Speak Out Day on Nov. 27, an event where students unite and pledge to take a stand against bullying. Stand Up and Speak Out Day was established at Memorial Junior High School in honor of Stephanie Ginsberg, a health teacher at the school for 42 years who died in August 2012. Ms. Ginsberg was active in teaching students the importance of speaking out against bullying and being an upstander, not a bystander. Fred Yutkowitz, Ginsberg’s husband, joined administrators, students and staff for the full-day event. Students and staff wore pledge shirts to send a loud, non-confrontational message of resistance to bullies. Students attended open forums during their lunch periods with Central High School students, who visited and spoke about the effects of bullying and the importance of being tolerant and supportive of others.
