Central High School hosted its first-ever Wayne’s Walk on March 1. The event was held in an effort to raise community awareness about the dangers of prescription drugs. The event was coordinated by social studies teacher Mary Parisi and several senior students, including Nicole Borman, Lucia Cicchetti, Jessica D’elia, Ashley Muscatelli, Allison O’Brien and Brianna Ricotta. Representatives from a number of agencies, including the Long Island Crisis Center, Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Oceanside Counseling Center, Peninsula Counseling Center and Southeast Nassau Guidance Center, were on hand to speak with students and faculty members about the dangers of abusing prescription drugs. Approximately 125 people participated in the walk, which worked its way from Central’s gymnasium and around Hendrickson Park. Afterward, participants signed the Wayne’s Walk banner, pledging their support for the cause, and wrote “letters of hope” to themselves or someone in need. The school’s student council promoted the event by selling Wayne’s Walk bracelets and hosting a bake sale. The school raised more than $1,700, which will be donated to the agencies that participated in the event.
