The district is proud to announce that Ryan Andres and Allyce Yang, two seniors that were identified as National Merit Semifinalists in September, have advanced to the finalist level in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Ryan attends Central High School and Allyce Yang is a student at South High School. Both qualified as semifinalists based on their PSAT scores and attained finalist titles after submitting applications. Consistently high academic performance and exceptional SAT scores were among the many requirements expected of students seeking the finalist status.
Both seniors are involved in various school activities and work hard in and outside of the classroom. Ryan is a member of the CHS National Honor Society, Class of 2016 club, E-TV video technology club and Future Business Leaders of America, in addition to playing the clarinet and participating in the band. He is interested in pursuing teaching or computer science in college.
Allyce plays the viola and is a member of the SHS orchestra. She was accepted to the New York State School Music Association’s All-State String Orchestra earlier this year and was previously selected as an alternate. Allyce has also performed in All-County, Long Island String Festival Association, South Shore Symphony and District Music Festival concerts and ensembles. Last year, she won the National Council of Teachers of English Writing Award. Her college plans include a possible focus on environmental science studies.
Approximately 1.5 million students enter the National Merit Scholarship Program each year when they take the PSAT. Only 15,000 move on to achieve the distinction as National Merit Finalists, which makes them eligible to potentially receive scholarship awards.
